Add Color to Your Space in 3 Easy Steps

Are you stuck in a rut of taupes, beiges, and grays? Don’t be afraid to break free and add color to your abode! With added colors and textures you’ll see your space in a whole new way.  Let’s get started:

1 – Pick your color

Go big and choose a saturated color that is full of life and brightness.  Yellow is a great example, but choose a color that speaks to you.

2 – Identify the focal point in the room

Identify a focal point in your room such a fireplace, a bed, or a window. Don’t know where to start? Step back and take a look at your room – where are your eyes drawn to? In the photo above, the focal point is the tufted ottoman and mirror right in the center of the room

3 – Add an accessory

Set the focal point off by adding an accessory.  It can be a pillow, throw, piece of artwork, or window covering in the bold color or pattern. Like the yellow drapery and pillows in the photo above, these pieces flank the mirror and add dimension.

Keep your eyes open for design inspiration

You need practice to become great at something, but studying what others have done will also help you get there.  Here is one of our inspirations:

Dressing windows in a contrasting hue or print will add height and pop to your space. Think of repeating a shade of color already in your room, but in a deeper or more saturated tone. For example, the picture above shows several windows as the backdrop and focal point of the dining room. I love how the distinctive burnt orange is repeated throughout the space, a good rule of thumb is to repeat a color in at least 3 places in a room.

Got an example of bold color you’d like to share?
