Summer days are fading fast, and school bells are just around the corner. After a summer full of camping trips, swimming, and running a little wild, my kids’ rooms are in need of some serious TLC. Here are a few tips to get your space organized and ready for the school year.
Create a space for learning.
Soft lighting and soothing colors such as light pastels are less distracting, making it easier for your child to focus on their homework. Ensure the space is comfortable and free of interruptions, televisions and toys. Organize the space and stock with the proper school supplies needed including pencils, rulers and calculator.

Organize your child’s closet.
The morning hours are hectic for most parents. Often, time is wasted due to disorganization.
- Ensure your children’s favorite outfits are easily obtainable. I always make sure my son’s latest fashion favorites are clean and in the appropriate drawers where he can reach them easily. I label the drawers so he knows what goes where.
- Make sure every shoe has its match! I have a separate bin for each type of shoe. If he wants to wear sneakers, flip flops or dress shoes, he knows where to find them.
- I always make sure jackets and back packs are in a quick easy place to grab. A simple coat rack is essential in my home.

Create a sleep-friendly bedroom
Most children between the ages of 5 and 12 get about 9.5 hours of sleep a night. Experts agree most children need about 10 to 11 hours a night, according to Kids’ Health. Children who do not receive enough sleep do not perform to their highest ability at school, and it may even have a negative impact their immune system.
My favorite window coverings for a child’s bedroom are LiteRise Duette Architella shades with opaque fabric. These shades offer the most room darkening fabric than any other Hunter Douglas product. You are sure to find a color and fabric that suits the needs of your child’s décor, while the cord-free features make it a very safe option for your child’s bedroom windows. Add drapery side panels and a top treatment to achieve the greatest room darkening effect and add a fun flare to your child’s bedroom.
Create a reading corner your child will love!
If your child loves the reading space, they will be more likely to spend time there. The space should be warm and inviting. Have a bookshelf that is easy to access and allows your child to browse through the selection. Creating an inviting reading space can be as simple as throwing over-sized pillows in a corner next to the bookshelf, or more elaborate. It’s a good idea to have real books on hand. Don’t always rely on electronic readers – it’s too enticing for kids to log into Angry Birds and forget about reading!
