As we ring in the New Year with resolutions abound, we also welcome the PANTONE® color of the year: Radiant Orchid.
This great mix of lavender and fuchsia is a must for refreshing your décor this year. Working well with the stable, dominant colors of grey, brown, black, and cream, Radiant Orchid can provide a perfect pop of color in neutral spaces, but has a depth that allows it to cohabitate with a lot of our other color favorites.
Looking for a small change to liven up a neutral space? This new blended beauty can be used in accent pillows and area rugs for a quick and non-committal update. A few pillows on a neutral sofa, a serving tray on a coffee table, and some candles or vases on a mantle will pull in the color to create a cohesive room.
Purple has always been defined as “the color of royalty,” but the color coined for 2014 is certainly accessible to the common public. It is considered a romantic color with feminine spirit, but paired with the right environment, like natural dark woods, black and grey accents, or metallic finishes, the color quickly shifts into a more modern, masculine shade.

If you have popular color combinations like browns and turquoise or tangerine and grey, Radiant Orchid pairs well to take your room to the next level in style. You could even add some Moroccan spice to a red and orange theme (think Pantone’s Samba and Koi) by adding subtle servings of purple. It is versatile and flexible enough to fit even your most stubborn of spaces.
I should also say that this color also comes with a few warnings.
The color purple, and this shade specifically, appears in nature very rarely. We could even say it is a hue truly owned by only the orchid. Adding too much to a space can appear overwhelming and artificial, so whether you are adding in pops of purple or painting all of your walls, remember to balance your colors and neutrals to create a harmonious space.
If you are looking for a refreshing change for the New Year, you can definitely find it in Radiant Orchid. Enjoy the New Year, and your new style!
