There is nothing more exciting than a blank slate – a new home where we’re starting from scratch. I recently was fortunate to be asked to work on a new build – a client had built a beautiful new contemporary home on 10 acres of land. The windows were many and the view was breathtaking. The home has over 100 windows, so there was a need for light control in the bedrooms and some privacy in the bathrooms. Fortunately, the client has a great eye for design so she also knew what she wanted – and equally important, what she didn’t want.
In this Hollywood contemporary home, the client wanted to keep everything very simple, but functional. The focus was on the bedrooms and bathrooms because the home gets so much light from those windows and the view is lovely. The client was aiming for a soft look, but wanted to avoid the look of drapery. We opted for Hunter Douglas Silhouette Window Shadings in all the bedrooms and bathrooms. This way they can still get the view, diffuse the light, and get full privacy without sacrificing the view.
The home has very little woodwork, which is in keeping with the clean lines. There are no moldings or sills around the windows and this was its own challenge for installation. The step molding inside the window frames made mounting the shades a very precise operation. Silhouette Window Shadings have a large head rail, which makes installation a little trickier. We decided on the automated option, PowerRise®, for the window behind the bathtub to make rising and lowering easier, but it made the installation even bulkier. This is why we love to provide expert installation as well as design – we were able to place the Silhouette shadings precisely and keep it all very uniform.
The master bedroom and bathroom have lots of the gray/white: the bed in the master is a covered dark charcoal gray and even the floor is done in grey bamboo flooring. The obvious color choice in there was Chalk Mural, which looks amazing. The soothing tones and clean lines make this a real getaway – an urban oasis with a stunning view. Simple luxury at its finest.
I’m thrilled with the calm elegance of the master bathroom. When my client got home after the installation, I got a text that read, “Looks awesome; love it!” She’s very happy. I can’t wait to go back and see what the house looks like with all the furniture!
My next post will take a look at another special feature of this project: a child’s bright orange bedroom!
