Thanksgiving is all about family, friends, and giving thanks over a bountiful and delicious meal. When setting the table this holiday, you’ll want to infuse your dining room with warmth and festive cheer. Follow these design tips to create the right ambiance.
Weave Festive Elements Into Existing Home Décor
You don’t need to swim in fall colors to evoke a festive feeling. Rather than attempting a total holiday overhaul, work with the strengths of your current design. Pick a theme or color palette that accentuates your home décor and integrate it throughout the dining area.

If your dining room is decorated using understated tones, create a beautiful Thanksgiving setting by accessorizing with vibrant orange and red accents. Alternatively, if your room has bold colors, integrate neutral fall accessories. For example, group together a collection of white gourds and candles or hang a wreath with pale leaves to complement daring colors.
Get Creative When Setting the Table
I love a little twist on tradition when it comes to decorating an entertaining space, and centerpieces for Thanksgiving dinner are no exception. This year I’m going to integrate typical fall vegetables and gourds into my tablescape. For example, a collection of blush-colored pumpkins or a hollowed out gourd used as a vase for bright flowers.

Keep in mind that your centerpiece doesn’t have to be on the table. Try placing it on the mantle or buffet to free up precious dining space and create a grander impression.

Place settings are a great way to highlight china, crystal, and other dinnerware reserved for special occasions. Tablecloths, placemats or chargers, and napkins should reinforce your festive theme and showcase beautiful dinnerware – as well as the delicious meal you’ve prepared.

For place settings, I also recommend adding a little drama to the dinner table by getting innovative with Thanksgiving motifs. Spray paint dry leaves or gild seasonal fruit and use them as name cards – these are also lovely takeaways for guests.

Don’t Forget the Windows
It’s easy to forget about windows when decorating, but they are a great frame for most spaces so make sure to give them a little attention this Thanksgiving. Add festive flair by hanging a lightweight harvest wreath or a bunting with Thanksgiving-specific messaging in your window. To integrate texture or dimension to the dining area, switch out draperies for something in a linen fabric and coordinate with throw pillows on nearby furniture or dining chairs.
