7 Unconventional Christmas Decorating Ideas

by Christen

I love Christmas traditions, but I also like to try things that are unconventional when it comes to decking the halls. Here are some of my favorite seasonal decorating ideas that helped to inspire my own holiday décor.

1. Holiday Window Vignette

I think windows are a fabulous place to bring in festive touches. Take a cue from Jennifer Rizzo’s pretty kitchen window, which is the stage for a charming little Christmas vignette. Two strings of mercury glass ornaments, potted plants, a diminutive wreath, and miniatures of woodland animals make for a fun holiday diorama.

2. Go Bold With Black and White

Carolyne Roehm uses black and white for bold but chic holiday decor that she calls “offbeat Christmas.” The addition of red roses and carnations, instead of poinsettias, bring in a splash of color and holiday cheer.

3. A Touch of Retro

Who’s up for a little modern retro? Chicago Magazine’s Cozy Modern mantle has a cool vintage vibe that uses shades of green, a string of vintage-style Christmas lights, as well as a mid-century chair and retro decorative accents to achieve a holiday look that’s fresh but reminiscent of the recent past.

4. Scandinavian Chic

Scandinavian-style holiday décor, by Skrinit mitt., has plenty of Christmas spirit without any clutter or fuss. The trick to this table scape is the dialed down scale of the accessories and a “less is more” decorating strategy. I think this would be perfect for a lightly furnished space or minimalist interior.

5. Boho Beach

I’d love to spend the holidays at a sunny, beachside vacation home – wouldn’t you? A Boho Beach Christmas theme would be the perfect way to decorate for a holiday by the ocean. The combination of the neutral colors and the natural elements — white feather ornaments, driftwood-like branches, and placemats made from polished shells – is seriously stunning.

6. Modern and Cozy

When you think of a warm, cozy Christmas, a minimalist setting might not immediately come to mind. However, this mantle by the Marion House Book (via Apartment Therapy) has plenty of holiday cheer. The modern nativity scene, red and white Christmas decorations and home accents, and a faux sheepskin rug make this fireside area the perfect place to lounge after a hectic morning of opening presents.

7. Christmas Tree Alternatives

For my family and me it’s not the holidays without a great big Christmas tree, but there are a plenty of reasons you might want or need to forgo an evergreen. Whether you live in a small but fabulous apartment or are trying to be eco-conscious, there are plenty of Christmas tree alternatives to choose from.

I particularly liked the ideas by HGTV, which ranged from positioning blue vases and ornaments on a bookshelf in a Christmas tree shape to grouping succulents together to build a living but faux-Christmas tree.
