Your Drapery Is Too Short. And Other Window Treatment Fails.

My clients fall into three categories – those covering naked windows, those that simply want an updated style and those that are replacing window treatment fails. And let me tell you, over the years, I’ve seen some epic fails. Like when a homeowner installs a covering that is too small for the window, leaving a very large gap on either side.

Not sure if your window coverings qualify for the window treatment hall of shame? If your windows can identify with one of the below fails, then it’s time to book an appointment with a window coverings expert.

Choosing ready-made treatments

Most big box retailers carry what they consider to be standard window treatment sizes. However, most windows vary considerably in width and height. Ill-fitting window treatments are not only an eyesore, but they also leave gaps and holes, increasing light leakage and reducing privacy. Which really defeats the whole purpose of installing them in the first place! In many cases, custom window treatments are not that much more expensive and will fit your window perfectly.

Drapery that is too short

For some windows, it’s just an inch or two. For others it’s more than a foot! You would never wear high-water pants, so why would you force your windows to wear floods. Disproportionate panels throw off the visual balance of the room, becoming an undesirable focal point. Remember, drapery should enhance your room, not detract from your decorating scheme.

Wrong functionality

In most homes, each window, even those within the same room or space, has different light-filtering needs. For instance, if you require total blackout light control, don’t select a window covering in a sheer fabric. Or if you have a beautiful view, but require some level of privacy, don’t install a window shade that will need to be kept closed and drawn at all times. It’s important to determine your requirements, like light control, privacy and energy efficiency, before choosing your window treatments. Keeping in mind that time of day and the season will also impact your selection.

Not choosing motorization

Window treatments for skylights and other high-up windows can be difficult to operate from the ground. Operating cords are unreachable, requiring you to get out the ladder each time you want to open or close your window coverings. Or, you’re forced to stick with just one light control setting. Take control of hard to reach windows by installing motorization, enabling you to operate your window treatments by remote, wall switch or through an app.

DIY Installation

Installing window treatments can be difficult and high stress – one mistake and you’re breaking out the spackling, repairing the hole (and finish) on your wall or window casing. A professional installer knows the correct way to hang each type of covering and will ensure your window treatments are installed perfectly the first time. Window style, ceiling height, window casing depth, etc. will all impact how the covering is hung, so save yourself time and research and hire a professional to do the job.
