The kitchen tends to be the heart of the home. It is a place where families and friends gather for more than just meals, but for conversation and togetherness.  It’s a source of nourishment, and companionship.  The colors we choose to surround ourselves with have been shown to have a direct impact on our mood so it is important to put some thought into one of the most important rooms in the house.  Using the right color schemes make it possible to create an inviting kitchen space for living and entertaining that is conducive to good conversation, happy feelings and relaxation.

Yellow is a fabulous color for a kitchen as it promotes energy and creates positive feelings.  Yellows that are too bright can be tiring to the eye and make the room look harsh, so stick with the slightly toned down shades or use as an accent.  Pairing with earthy tones such as browns and greens will ground the room.  This kitchen brings the outdoors in by using color apple green, which is a color that has been shown to be comforting and relieve stress..  Combining these two colors creates a space that feels warm, happy, and balanced.  Adding accents like lavender, which is associated with creativity, gives the whole color scheme depth.

Warm colors for large kitchens

When creating an inviting space in a large kitchen, warm colors are the perfect choice for achieving a cozy feel as they make large spaces seem smaller and more intimate. Brown is warm with an earthy, organic feel to it.  Orange is a warm and inviting color that lifts ones mood, evokes enthusiasm, energy and sociability.  Pairing them together in this kitchen allows for the fun lively tile colors of the backsplash to be highlighted, creating a space that is both inviting and enlivening.

Soften smaller spaces

If bold and bright is not your style or you have a smaller kitchen, you can go for softer colors and neutrals.  Pairing soft colors like lavendar with soft greys creates a feeling that is both sophisticated and upscale, yet peaceful and comfortable.

One option for creating an appealing space for both the family and entertaining is to leave the kitchen a pure white and let the accessories do the talking.  White is the perfect backdrop for a myriad of inviting color! From dishes to cookware there are many ways to add a pop of color.  Blue in a kitchen can encourage relaxation and conversation.  Green is calming, cooling and refreshing while sunny yellow is energizing and uplifting.  The beautiful thing about focusing the color scheme on the accent pieces is that you can easily change it as the seasons or the mood strikes you.

Experiment

Once you have chosen the color scheme that fits your mood, you can do some easy makeovers like painting old chairs and adding new cushions, using color tile as a backsplash or painting a focal wall to set the mood.  Whether you are going for warm and cozy or exciting and bold,  have fun with color and you will be creating an inviting heart of your home in no time!
