We’ve all heard of “man caves,” and dark and daring dens are very entertaining spaces to decorate. However, when it comes to lighting, natural light just can’t be beat. Speak with any photographer and they will tell you that natural lighting allows colors show more vibrantly and small details appear more vivid to the human eye.
With modern décor – where color, lines, and texture are so greatly emphasized – natural light must be appreciated and salvaged without compromising the style of the space. In my client’s newly remodeled split level basement-turned-game room, we wanted to be sure that privacy was being considered, without making the space too dark. Think cool den, not dark cave.
At first the clients specified vertical blinds for the sliding glass door, and wood blinds on the windows, but they just didn’t do justice to my client’s exceptional choices in furniture, flooring, and other striking design pieces. We selected more fitting window treatments to complement the overall décor.
The bold color of the red leather seating, the wood grain porcelain tiles, the juxtaposition of the textured area rugs and the smooth metallic trunk coffee table were all carefully chosen to create an adventurous modern room. These are focal points that your eyes should be drawn to, so the windows had to be stylish, without being distracting.
We wanted more subtle, subdued colors for the window treatments, while adding to the wonderful texture in the poker room. It was great that we could coordinate the fabric of the Hunter Douglas Vignette Modern Roman Shades with Vignette Traversed Shades with VertiGlide on the sliding glass door. The shades are super easy to adjust, with no cords to worrry about. Even the slender, rectangular shape of the bathroom windows were no challenge for the Hunder Douglas Vignette window shades!
Designing with a finer fabric than your typical vertical blinds, we helped camouflage the not-so-lovely backyard without compromising the natural light. We added a nice layer of texture to the room, and tied together an already incredible space.
Overall, the client was pleased to create a game room with a background of beautifully dressed windows that did not steal the show from his distinct modern design.
